The plant catalog search feature lets you find plants based on basic needs such as cold hardiness zone, sun exposure and water needs; beyond that, design styles and special situations are discussed. Can You Tell Me How Large a Plant Will Grow?Yes. Our plant catalog lists landscape size, which is the plant's size at maturity. What Makes Monrovia Soil so Special?Plants grown in nutrient-rich soils are healthier, with stronger root systems; therefore, a critical component of the Monrovia growing process is our soil. Monrovia is the only grower of premium ornamentals in the world that custom blends 42 different soil mixes, including slow-release fertilizer and organic matter such as compost.. Seven different types of mycorrhizae are added to our soil mix to create an environment that dramatically increases the life of our plants. Mycorrhiza is a beneficial fungus that develops in and around a plant's roots, stimulating its nutrient and water uptake, increasing fruit and flower yield, and reducing transplant shock and other environmental stresses. Once you begin adding Monrovia plants to your garden, the mycorrhizae in our soil will begin to spread, benefiting your entire garden's eco-system. You'll see for yourself that quality soil ensures that plants flourish, making them far more resistant to pests and disease. Can I Recycle My Monrovia Pot?We are working to make our green Monrovia pots easily recyclable in local municipal recycling programs throughout the United States. Presently about 70 percent of our pots can be recycled at curbside. If you're not familiar with what can or cannot be recycled, simply turn the pot over and look for a number surrounded by a recycling symbol (known as a resin identification code). Our curbside recyclable pots are made of high-density polyethylene (HDPE) and are designated #2 HDPE. Most municipal recycling facilities accept these plant pots, as #2 HDPE is the most-often recycled plastic in the United States - the same plastic used to make milk jugs and household laundry and dishwashing detergent bottles. High-density polyethylene is commonly recycled into plastic lumber, tables, benches, truck cargo liners, trash receptacles and other durable plastic products. Monrovia highly encourages recycling our plant containers and all household recyclables. To find out which plastics are accepted in your local area, contact your community's solid waste department. The remaining 30 percent of our pots are #5 Polypropylene and can be recycled in some municipalities' curbside recycling programs. To determine the best recycling method in your community, please check with your local city or at Earth911.com. Can I Bring My Used Monrovia Plant Pots to my Local Garden Center? No. Unfortunately, we do not collect used Monrovia containers from garden centers for both logistic and sanitary reasons. Due to pest and disease issues such as the Mediterranean Fruit Fly, the Glassy-Wing Sharpshooter, Fire Ants and Sudden Oak Death, it is not viable to bring the containers back on to the nursery grounds; the resources and chemicals needed to disinfect the pots would offset the potential benefits. What is Monrovia Doing to Reduce the Impact of Plastic in the Waste Stream? We are actively allocating resources to work on a viable solution to this problem. One such program is the Missouri Botanical Gardens Pots to Planks initiative, of which Monrovia is a proud sponsor. This program turns recycled garden containers into usable landscape lumber. In 2008, the program kept more than 158,000 pounds of plastic garden containers from entering the waste stream. In addition, there are several solutions currently under trial in our research department; one that we are currently testing is the use of biodegradable pots. We hope that the current testing will provide us with an alternative to plastic in the near future. I Have a Plant That Isn't Thriving. Can You Tell Me What Went Wrong? It is difficult to diagnose a sick plant without seeing firsthand the plant or the conditions in which it was grown. Your local garden center can be a wonderful resource and provide insights and advice. Often, when you bring them a leaf or branch, they can help diagnose the problem and find ways to resolve it. They will appreciate if you carry any diseased foliage in a zip lock bag to avoid spreading it in the nursery. Find your nearest garden center through our retailer search. You can also email us at customercare(#)monrovia.com.
