Getting Started.
For summer, it's all about being outside and enjoying your yard. You're entertaining outside, cooking and dining outside and just relaxing on the patio. Time to liven things up with some colorful containers.
First, look around at your existing containers. Do you have neglected containers with old, scraggly plants that are anemic and barely alive? It might be time to pull them out and start fresh. It's a good idea to empty out the old soil, too. Wash the container and start with a high quality organic potting mix.
Do you need new containers? Decide on your look - modern, traditional, rustic -- and make a trip to the garden center. Give some thought to size. If you have a huge patio, a few small pots might get lost. And if you live in a hot climate, smaller pots will dry out faster. Do you want to draw the eye upward? You may want some hanging pots, or large pots with tall plants in them. Window boxes are not just for windows -- they look great hanging along a deck rail.
