Companion Plants (Description): This blue, very short Hosta is stunning when combined with variegated plants such as Variegated Common Periwinkle (Vinca minor `Variegata`) and Variegated Broad-leaved Sedge (Carex siderosticha `Variegata`). Works nicely against the foliage of Alaskan Fern (Polystichum setiferum) and the fluffy Luxuriant Fringed Bleeding Heart (Dicentra x `Luxuriant`).

Design Styles: This resilient ground cover Hosta offers great weed control for under shrubs and in partly shaded areas that are too sunny for other Hosta. A reliable filler under deciduous shade trees; plant densely to create a mass or continuous edging.

Care Information

Follow a regular watering schedule during the first growing season to establish a deep, extensive root system. For a neat appearance, remove old foliage before new leaves emerge. Divide clumps every 2 to 3 years in early spring.

Background Information

History: The genus Hosta contains over 40 species mostly native to China and Japan. H. plantaginea is the ancestor of most modern hybrids, introduced from China by French botanist, Lamarck. Serendipity is the result of a cross between 'Blue Cadet' and the Japanese species, H. tokudama.

Lore: Hosta was named by the Austrian, Leopold Trattinick who honored his friend and fellow countryman, Dr. N.T. Host.
