Companion Plants (Description): Plant alongside bright yellow, gold or silver foliage perennials like Hosta, Spotted Dead Nettle or an array of other colorful Coral Bell varieties. Create an Asian container garden with grasses and small stature Japanese Maples.

Care Information

Follow a regular watering schedule during the first growing season to establish a deep, extensive root system. For a neat appearance, remove old foliage before new leaves emerge. Divide clumps every 2 to 3 years in early spring.

Background Information

History: This hybrid was developed by Charles Oliver of The Primrose Path in southwestern Pennsylvania. It features the large habit of H. villosa with the leaf silvering of H. 'Silver Scrolls'. Other varieties in the 'Silver Scrolls' ancestry include 'Quilter's Joy', H. brizoides 'Chatterbox' and 'Regina'. H. villosa is a native of the eastern United States. Native Americans used these thick roots for a medicinal by drying and then pounding them into a wound dressing, hence one common name, alum root. The genus name honors a European botanist, Johan Heinrich von Heucher who first identified this western American wildflower in 1730.
