Care Information
Follow a regular watering schedule during the first growing season to establish a deep, extensive root system. For a neat appearance, remove old foliage before new leaves emerge. Divide clumps every 2 to 3 years in early spring.
Design Ideas
This hosta makes an excellent filler for shaded beds and borders. It covers up bare legs and discourages weeds beneath older shrubs. A reliable filler under deciduous shade trees or building sheltered exposures. Makes a wonderful sideyard plant for lush looks between buildings. Suited to edging or massing in naturalistic woodland or among marginal plants at water gardens, pools and streams.
Companion Plants
This hosta is exceptional combined with contrasting hued forms such as Eola Sapphire Plantain Lily, (Hosta x 'Eola Sapphire'), Guacamole Plantain Lily, (Hosta x 'Guacamole') and Olive Bailey Langon Plantain Lily, (Hosta x 'Olive Bailey Langdon'). It's also lovely with Burgundy Lace Painted Fern, (Athyrium nipponicum 'Burgundy Lace') and Origami Mix Columbine, (Aquilegia x hybrida 'Origami Lace').
History
The genus Hosta includes over 40 species mostly native to China and Japan. H. plantaginea from which most of our modern hybrids descend reached Europe in the 1780s. It was first introduced by the French botanist, Lamarck. Much breeding produced a huge range with a variety of qualities and ancestry from H. ventricosa, H. glauca, H. fortunei and most importantly with this cultivar, H. undulata .Sitting Pretty is a 1987cultivar of the famous New York hosta breeder, Paul Aden. It was derived from a cross between two of his other hybrids, Reiko and Amy Aden
Lore
For much of its early life, these plants were grouped into genus Funkia by the Germans but nomenclature yielded to the Austrian, Leopold Trattinick who conferred Hosta to honor his fellow countryman, Dr. N. T. Host.
