Care Information
Follow a regular watering schedule during the first growing season to establish a deep, extensive root system. For a neat appearance, remove old foliage before new leaves emerge. Divide clumps every 2 to 3 years in early spring.
Design Ideas
Use this vigorous hosta as a groundcover beneath the canopy of shade trees and groves. Makes a beautiful carpet beneath aging shrubs with exposed legs. Add to foundation plantings to fill in gaps with vibrant green foliage and flowers. Exceptional along the edge of a flagstone walk, beneath a fountain or popping out between stones of a rock waterfall.
Companion Plants
This smaller Hosta stands well in front of Luxuriant Fringed Bleeding Heart (Dicentra x 'Luxuriant'). For contrast at a similar height, try the blue flowers and bronze foliage of Catlin's Giant Carpet Bugle (Ajuga reptans 'Catlin's Giant'), the dainty Woodland Iris ( Iris innominata) and the pink-flowering Heartleaf Bergenia (Bergenia cordifolia).
History
This genus was named for Dr. N. T. Host, a contemporary of Austrian Leopold Trattinick. The genus to this day contains about forty mostly native to China and Japan. Most modern hybrids such as this are derived from H. Plantaginea often influenced by H. undulatabreeding This is the first widely grown fragrant flowered hosta variety introduced in 1950.
