Care Information
Follow a regular watering schedule during the first growing season to establish a deep, extensive root system. Feed with a general purpose fertilizer before new growth begins in spring. For a tidy, neat appearance, shear annually to shape.
Design Ideas
A perfectly colored evergreen for the front of foundation beds to discourage weeds and cover up exposed legs of aging shrubs. Plant in masses on slopes and banks for erosion control. Makes an attractive bright spot of color during the winter season in beds and borders in any location. A vital component for interest in all-green Asian inspired gardens.
Companion Plants
This great low juniper belongs with other low profile junipers with contrasting color such as Hughes Juniper, (Juniperus horizontalis 'Hughes') or Blue Creeper Juniper, (Juniperus scopulorum 'Monam'). It's striking with Prostrate Rock Cotoneaster, (Cotoneaster horizontalis 'Perpusillus') and Huntington Carpet Rosemary, (Rosmarinus officinalis 'Huntington Carpet').
History
This is a massive group of quite similar plants first classified in 1767 and named for its point of origin, central and northern China. The Chinese produced a number of cultivars before the first found its way to the west. The result was a huge array of colors, shapes and sizes of this highly variable species. It is likely this variety descended from the very first gold variegated form found in England of a sport in 1855 and later named 'Gold Coast'.
Lore
Juniper berries were the flavoring for bathtub gin during the depression and oil of juniper has been used by industry in many preparations.
