Design Ideas
This gorgeous hydrangea is the perfect foundation shrub for older homesites under canopies of old shade trees. Makes a beautiful seasonal accent for back of the border. Use for interest in outdoor living spaces with close up flower appreciation. Adapts beautifully to sheltering tree groves and fence lines. Perfect for large pots on porch, patio or terrace.
Companion Plants
Combine this beauty with other lovers of shaded conditions such as Magnoliaeflora Camellia, (Camellia japonica "Magnoliaeflora'), Dwarf Purple Rhododendron, (Rhododendron impeditum), European Ostrich Fern, (Matteuccia struthiopteris). It would be stellar with Black Tulip Magnolia, (Magnolia x soulangiana 'JURmag1') and Vaughn's Lillie Oak Leaf Hydrangea, (Hydrangea quercifolia 'Vaughn's Lillie')
History
Hydrangea macrophyllaoriginates in Japan although it is believed that the first plants introduced to the west came from specimens collected in China. The species was named by Nicolas Charles Seringe of France but was simultaneously classified as hortensis in Britain and opuloides in Germany. This is probably due to the great variation in flowers, both mophead and lacecap forms. The genus contains upwards of 80 species and all but two are native to Asia. 'Ayesha' is a unique cultivar with spatulate petals that originated in Japan.
Lore
Bigleaf hydrangeas feature two flower styles known as mophead and lacecap. Mophead florets are composed of entirely sterile florets. With lacecaps only the small inconspicuous flowers at the center of the ring of sterile florets are fertile.
