    Thrives in rich, acidic, well-drained soils. Prefers cool, humid environments and even moisture; shelter from harsh drying winds. Water deeply and regularly during the first few growing seasons to establish an extensive root system. Feed with a general purpose fertilizer before new growth begins in spring.Pruning time: fall.

    History:
    The species, C. pisifera is known as sawara cypress, collected from Japan by Dutch physician, Philipp von Siebold, and later introduced by the nursery firm of J. G. Veitch in 1861. The subspecies squarrosa was introduced since 1894.
    Lore:
    Chamaecyparis translates from the Greek as false cypress because it is technically distinct from the genus Cupressus.
