This genus translates from the Greek for dwarf and cypress leading to its common name, false-cypress. This species was collected from Japan by Dutch physician Philipp von Siebold and introduced by the English nursery firm of H. G. Veitch in 1861. This sport was discovered in Konjin Nursery in Holland before 1964.
