Design Ideas Finely textured foliage can soften the effects of bolder foliage plants such as hostas, and the grayish-green color of the leaves can tone down the deep greens of plumbago or vinca. Plant close to a sidewalk or patio for maximum enjoyment of the aromatic foliage. This low-grower is ideal at the front of a border; its spreading habit makes it useful as a non-invasive groundcover. As an edging plant, its gentle creeping habit can be used to soften the harsh lines of a sidewalk or driveway.
Flower Color Purple
Foliage Color Gray-green
Companion Plants Coneflower (Echinacea); Bee Balm (Monarda); Butterfly Weed (Asclepias); Butterfly Bush (Buddleja); Salvia (Salvia)
CARE
Care Provide well drained soil. Follow a regular watering schedule the first growing season to establish an extensive root system. Water can be reduced after establishment. Prune spent flowers to prolong blooming. To keep tidy, cut back before new growth begins in spring.
HISTORY
Lore The aroma of Nepeta is irresistible to cats, often found curled up and napping beside or on top of this plant. This selection is a 2008 Plant Select® winner. Plant Select® is a collaboration of Colorado State University, Denver Bonanic Gardens, and the green industry, helping gardeners and horticultural professionals transform the American landscape to a vibrancy inspired by the western regional landscape.
