Care Information
Follow a regular watering schedule during the first growing season to establish a deep, extensive root system. Feed with a general purpose fertilizer. Provide support such as a trellis or arbor. Prune annually to control size. Pruning time: early spring.
Design Ideas
This exquisite vine deserves to be grown up close to outdoor living areas due to the intensely colored blooms. Train onto a porch or balcony weaving through the railings or up the post. Cascades nicely off walls and fences. Exceptional climbing into trees and shrubs in tropical gardens.
Companion Plants
For truly tropical looks, group this vine with exotics such as Tropicanna Canna, (Canna indica 'Phaison'), Magnificent Brunfelsia, (Brunfelsia magnifica), Flamenco Flame Hibiscus, (Hibiscus rosa-sinensis 'MonHope') and Midnight Rose Coral Bells, (Heuchera x 'Midnight Rose').
History
This is a unique hybrid of two closely related vines of Mexico and tropical Central America. It's parents are purple flowered Distictus laxiflora and fast growing D. buccinatoria. The latter is well known under genus Bignonia and Phaedranthus, but in recent years has finally been classified in its own genus.
Lore
This trumpet vine is a strong hummingbird lure with its tubular flowers adapted to the bird's long beak.
