Care Information
Follow a regular watering schedule during the first growing season to establish a deep, extensive root system. Watering can be reduced after establishment. USE CAUTION IN REMOVING PLANT FROM CONTAINER SO THAT ROOTS ARE NOT DAMAGED. Pruning time: spring.
Design Ideas
This bougainvillea looks great spilling out of a container, trained on a trellis or near a swimming a pool.
Companion Plants
Very beautiful with Lavender SwirlTM Trailing Lantana (Lantana sellowiana 'Lavender Swirl'), a white- and purple-flowering groundcover. Continue the color scheme by interspersing with clumps of Sea Lavender (Limonium perezii), a lovely perennial also with purple and white blooms, and with upright, white- and pink-flowering shrubs like Roundleaf Laurustinus (Viburnum tinus 'Robustum') and SpringtimeTM Indian Hawthorn (Raphiolepis indica 'Monme'). Use trees like the pyramidal-shaped Star Pine (Araucaria heterophylla) as support.
History
B. brasiliensis was the first species to reach Europe. It was discovered in the Solomon Islands by French explorer de Bougainville, for whom the genus was named. Twelve other species were since discovered in South America. Most plants grown today are the result of crosses between parent species, B. spectablis, B. glabra and B. peruvian, and countless unnamed early hybrids.
Lore
This genus was named after the famous French explorer Louis Antoine de Bougainville who circumnavigated the globe from 1766 to 1769. What are mistaken for flowers are actually colored leaf bracts that surround a tiny white tubular flower.
