Lee Larson, Southern Ohio Territory, Joined Monrovia in 1960
AZUSA, Calif. – August 25, 2010 – Monrovia, the leading grower of premium garden plants, celebrated the 50th anniversary of one of its sales craftsmen, Lee Larson. At just 15 years of age, Larson started at the Azusa, Calif.-based Monrovia as a sales trainee, and was promoted to inside sales at age 18. Just four years later he was awarded a sales territory, leaving the California-based nursery and moving to Ohio, where he covered much of the Northeastern US and Eastern Canada.
“Back in the 1960s, we were still expanding into the Eastern part of the country, and Lee was instrumental in opening up and establishing those sales territories,” said Miles Rosedale, CEO. “Throughout our history, Monrovia has strived to have the best sales force and customer service in the industry. Thanks to talented people like Lee Larson, we've been able to build that reputation.”
One of Larson's guiding principles has been to treat people as you want to be treated, and this focus on the golden rule made him a successful sales craftsman. He was named the Top Salesperson of the Year at Monrovia 22 times, and has mentored many of the new sales associates – including his younger brother, Mark, who has been with Monrovia for 38 years and is presently a sales representative in the Southeast.
According to his brother, “Lee was always a salesperson. One day when he was about six years old, he was standing on the street corner while the older kids were walking to school. He was shaking a jar of rocks and chanting; 'rock candy for sale, rock candy for sale…it's hard but boy its good!'”
Plants and gardening is not just a job for Lee Larson. He loves to spend time in garden, especially planting for birds, which flock to his garden.
He was honored at a recent company sales meeting with a commemorative plaque. Larson will continue to cover the southern Ohio territory for Monrovia.
