History | The first of this hardiest of hardy Schefflera species, the Schefflera taiwaniana 'Yuan Shan', was collected by plant explorer Daniel J. Hinkley from the slopes of the highest mountain in Taiwan in 1999. The Winged Phoenix™ cultivar is a 2018 Monrovia introduction; the product of a breeding program under the direction of Rick Wells. The new variety was selected among a planting of seedlings of Schefflera taiwaniana in May 2011 and subsequently propagated by tissue culture. U.S. Plant Patent #30,465 was issued on April 30, 2019. The species was later determined to be Heptapleurum taiwaniana. |
