Variegated Box-Leaf Azara

At his Windcliff garden in the Pacific Northwest, plant explorer Dan Hinkley talks with Monrovia’s Nicholas Staddon about the Variegated Box-leaf Azara (Azara microphylla ‘Variegata’). This graceful shrub or small tree has small leaves marbled with creamy white, accentuated by tiny, intensely scented spring flowers that exude a wonderful white-chocolate like fragrance. Highly effective as a foundation plant, espalier or container specimen, with good shade tolerance making it well-suited for planting between buildings or under taller canopies in an established garden.
