Description A popular cold hardy, North American native fern with distinctive, fan-shaped, lacy, green fronds on shiny black, curved stems. Spreads quickly in moist, lightly shaded areas with good air circulation. Use among traditional woodland plants beneath shade trees. Deciduous.

Care Thrives in enriched, acidic, moist, well-drained soils. Water deeply, regularly in first growing season to establish an extensive root system; once established water regularly to maintain evenly moist soil. Feed frequently during growing season with general purpose fertilizer. Remove old fronds after new growth begins in spring.
