Design Ideas Although this Rhododendron looks beautiful anywhere in the landscape, its small size and showy coloring make it perfect for the middle of the border. Ideal with other acid-loving shrubs along foundations of the house or the base of a fence. Great background for virtually all perennials. Also works well to cover ground beneath and behind a smaller accent tree. Makes a good hedge when left to grow into its natural shape.
Flower Color Red
Foliage Color Dark Green
Companion Plants Holly (Ilex); Lily of the Valley Shrub (Pieris); Japanese Forest Grass (Hakonechloa); Astilbe (Astilbe); Alpine Clematis (Clematis alpina)
CARE
Care Provide organically rich, well-drained, acidic soil. Apply a thick layer of mulch to keep roots cool, avoiding the crown. Avoid harsh afternoon sun exposures and shelter from drying winter winds. Water deeply and regularly during the first growing season to establish an extensive root system. Feed with an acid fertilizer after bloom.
HISTORY
Lore Rhododendron was named and classified by Linnaeus who named it from the Greek for rose tree.
