Design IdeasWith their exotic foliage, Cannas are the darlings of the tropical garden even when located in more temperate climates. They are outstanding in containers that allow for winter cold protection. The plants are superior accents around water gardens and are a natural since these are technically marginals and will grow in standing water. They are also outstanding single specimens against contrasting backgrounds whether hardscape or dense foliage.
Companion PlantsThis canna is a natural match for anything tropical such as Hardy Japanese Fiber Banana, (Musa bassjoo), Mexican Weeping Bamboo, (Otatea acuminata aztecorum), or more cold hardy Giant Panda Bamboo, (Fargesia rufa). Combine with bold purple or black foliage of Caruba Good Luck Plant, (Cordyline fruticosa 'Bra01'), Sienna Sunrise Heavenly Bamboo, (Nandina domestica 'Monfar') and spiky Purple Majesty Millet, (Pennisteum glaucum 'Purple Majesty') or the bushier Purple Fountain Grass, (Pennisetum setaceum 'Rubrum').
Care Information
Follow a regular watering schedule to establish a deep, extensive root system. Protect from severe cold. In mild winter areas leave in-ground for spring regrowth. In cold winter areas dig and store bulb in a cool dry place. As an indoor plant, locate near bright light.
