Care Information
Follow a regular watering schedule during the first growing season to establish a deep, extensive root system. Watering can be reduced after establishment. Feed with a general purpose fertilizer before new growth begins in spring. Pruning time: winter.
Design Ideas
Dwarf trees like this one beg for smaller plants to accent their form without overwhelming them. Use this dwarf Citrus in a container or in an informal row planting.
Companion Plants
As a nice contrast, try the bronzy red new foliage of Teenie GenieTM Miniature Brush Cherry (Eugenia myrtifolia 'Nanum') along with Dwarf False Heather (Cuphea hyssopifolia 'Compacta'), with its rose-purple blooms. To add lightness, try Variegated Miniature Gardenia (Gardenia jasminoides 'Radicans Variegata'), a pretty, small-scale groundcover featuring fragrant white flowers and green foliage with creamy white margins.
History
The entire genus, Citrus, can be traced back to its land of origin in Southeast Asia, India, southern China and Malaysia. Arab traders were the first to bring oranges out of Asia and in the 12th century they introduced it into Spain. This variety was developed early on in Valencia Spain as well as Portugal. It was imported into Mexico and then the California missions where it was proven early on to be compatible with the west coast climate.
Lore
This is the most widely cultivated commercial orange in California and the best for the home landscape.
