Design IdeasHydrangeas are a gorgeous foundation plant, large enough for solid color throughout the growing season, with a bonus of gorgeous flowers. Plant in problem acidic soils beneath canopies of shade trees or even smaller accent trees. Very bright flowers are attention-getters at focal points, and planting in groups intensifies this overall effect. Good for edging outdoor living spaces with cooling, rich green foliage and close up appreciation of huge flower trusses. A vital component of a florist's or crafter's landscape when massed to provide plentiful cutting material.
Companion PlantsRhododendron (Rhododendron); Holly (Ilex); Hosta (Hosta); Rose of Sharon (Hibiscus); Sweetspire (Itea)

Care Information
Provide organically rich, well-drained soil. Apply mulch to conserve moisture and protect in harsh winters. Water deeply, regularly in first growing season to establish extensive root system. Soil and water pH influences bloom color; consult garden center for suitable amendments. Feed in early spring. Prune spent blooms to promote repeat bloom.
Light Needs:
Partial Sun / Partial Shade: These two terms are often used interchangeably to mean 3-6 (or 4-6) hours of sunlight each day. However, there is a difference.
Partial shade typically means the plants will appreciate a more gentle exposure such as the weaker morning or early afternoon sun, with the emphasis on providing the minimum needed shade and sheltering from intense late afternoon sun. Partial sun typically means the plants need some direct sun, so the emphasis is on meeting the required minimum hours of sunlight, with filtered sunlight or shade the balance of the day.
Both are best with shelter from the harshest late afternoon sun. This shade could be provided by a structure, a wall, larger plants or tree(s).
