Ann' is a hybrid of M. lilliflora 'Nigra' and M. stellata 'Rosea'. It was developed at the National Arboretum by Dr. Francis de Vos and William Kosar and introduced in 1965. Their ten year work effort at the Arboretum yielded a number of de Vos and Kosar hybrids known as the "Little Girl Magnolias".

The Chinese magnolias were first introduced in France via Jesuit botanists, where much of the early breeding began.
