HistoryRanunculus asiaticus is a well-known species that is widely popular as a cool-season garden bedding plant and the tall, field-grown cut flowers, primarily grown from corms, are a mainstay in the florist trade. Between 1960-1970, breeders intensified efforts in developing varieties suitable for consistent seed propagation and during that process, dwarf and compact selections were made. The seed-propagated F1 hybrid series BloomingdaleII was introduced by Sakata Seed America in 1983. Particularly dwarf and with proportionally smaller leaves, this hybrid is also quite cold tolerant, tolerating temperatures to 23'°F. Ranunculus is a true herbaceous perennial; flowering in spring then dying back to the ground. Under the soil the plant produces a crown, these can be left to regrow or lifted to divide and multiply the plants, otherwise they can simply be treated as annuals.
