History
Jacaranda, a genus of the American tropics, was named by famed French botanist, Antoine Juisseau in the early 19th century. The genus name is that used by locals in Brazil. This dwarf cultivar, Jacaranda mimosifolia 'Sakai01' (trade name Bonsai Blue) originated in Japan, where it was discovered by breeder Kiyoshi Sakai. It was found as a chance seedling in his garden in Nichinan-shi, Miyazaki, Japan in May 1995. The new cultivar was noted for its remarkable dwarf habit, in comparison to other seedlings of Jacaranda mimosifolia observed. Upon grafting and continued evaluation, the new cultivar produced flowers only 2 years after grafting, as compared to the species Jacaranda mimosifolia which typically does not flower until reaching ten years of age. This new plant was first reproduced by asexual propogation in Nichinan-shi, Miyazaki, Japan in May 1997. Continued asexual propagation by budding and grafting has determined that the characteristics of this cultivar are stable and true to type. U.S. Plant Patent #
