Juniperus sabina 'Buffalo'
Pronunciation: ju-NIP-er-us sa-BI-na
|Description||A very durable, low-growing, wide-spreading conifer with soft, feathery green foliage. Provides excellent coverage and erosion control for slopes. Works well as groundcover along walkways, in borders, and in rock gardens. Cascades nicely over retaining walls. Tolerates heat, cold, and drought. Easy to grow, even under coastal conditions. Evergreen.|
|Watering||Water when top 2 inches of soil is dry.|
|Blooms||Conifer; prized for foliage.|
|Mature Size||Moderate growing; reaches less than 1 ft. tall, spreading up to 8 ft. wide.|
|Landscape Use||Border, Ground Cover, Hillside|
|Design Ideas||When creeping shrubs such as this are used as groundcover, you can plant them through weed-blocking fabric. Thrives in rocky ground, mountainous conditions and where the soil is thin. Use on slopes for coverage or erosion control. Allow it to drape off retaining walls or cover unsightly transition zones at the edges of paving. Excellent deer resistance.|
|Companion Plants||Clematis (Clematis); Rose (Rosa); Russian Sage (Perovskia); Maiden Grass (Miscanthus); Barberry (Berberis); Catmint (Nepeta)|
|Care||Adaptable and easy to grow in most well-drained soils; avoid overly wet conditions. Water deeply, regularly in first growing season to establish root system. Once established, reduce frequency; tolerates moderate drought. Space 6 ft. apart as groundcover; closer for faster coverage. Control weeds with mulch until plants fill in.|
