History | Bush Gems® kangaroo paws were developed as part of an Anigozanthos breeding program in Australia that dates back to the 1970's. The program was started by hybridizer Merv Turner, and in turn by Turner's apprentice Angus Stewart. Beginning in 2002, Stewart worked with Ramm Botanicals to produce new and exciting cultivars to add to the collection. Bush Gems® offer compact plants with excellence disease resistance, and boast excellent flowering in a wide array of vibrant colors. Bush gems will tolerate occasional, brief, light frost. |
Lore | Anigozanthos is an Australian native species prized for its tall stalks of unique velvety blooms covered by fine, vibrantly colored hairs, on a rhizomatous plant with a fan-like cluster of stiff blade-like foliage, similar to an iris. A long-lasting cut flower that is highly prized within the cut flower industry worldwide, particularly in The United States, Japan, and Israel. They adapt easily to Mediterranean-like climates with warm, dry summers. They are relatively short-lived plants but many of today's hybrids are longer-lived than their parent plants. |
