A superb late flowering evergreen from western China. The distinctive foliage is an arresting shade of silvery jade while the new growth in spring emerges in tones of burnished red, a color that remains in the leaf petioles throughout the year. Ruby red spikes appear in winter, opening to soft yellow blooms.
Prefers humus-rich, evenly moist, well-drained soil, sited in dappled shade, or morning sun with afternoon shade. Water deeply and regularly during the first growing season to establish an extensive root system. Once established, water as needed to maintain consistent soil moisture. Prune to shape after flowering.
History
Native to the Yunnan Province of China, this distinctive species was brought to Monrovia by plant explorer Daniel J. Hinkley, by way of Japan.
