History
This new cultivar is the product of a breeding program conducted in a cultivated area of Hazerswoude, The Netherlands, with the goal of developing new varieties with a shorter overall height and attractive red flowers. 'Slingco 1' originated from the crossing of the seed parent Weigela 'Evita' (not patented) and the pollen parent, Weigela 'Red Prince' (not patented) in 2005. 'Slingco 1' was selected in 2007 as a single plant within the progeny. The new cultivar is distinguishable from both parents'Red Prince'and 'Evita' in having a more compact habit and a shorter overall height. The flowers of 'Slingco 1' are red with a white eye in contrast to the purple flower buds of Evita and the purple-red flowers of both parents.
