Both species of Gelsemium are native to the southeastern U.S., most notably the Carolinas. G. sempervirens bloom times range from late winter to early spring; G. rankinii blooms in spring and repeats in late summer to fall.
Lore
The genus Gelsemium was classified by French botanist, Antoine Jussieu and named it for the similarity to Jasmine. These plants contain a potent alkaloid similar to strychnine.
