This variety derives its name Acer 'Esk Sunset' for is place of origin. It was discovered as a chance seedling by John Wills at Trelinoe, his garden in the Esk Valley, which is on the east coast of the the North Island of New Zealand. Mr. Wills also introduced Acer pseudoplatanus 'Esk Flamingo' into the nursery trade.
