Design Ideas | This has long been the most reliable cool-season groundcover for shade. Perfect for planting under the canopies of older trees, where little else grows. A lifesaver on the north sides of walls or north-facing slopes, and between tall multistory buildings. Works very nicely in the front of shaded borders or as filler between larger shrubs. Dense enough to keep down weeds, it is a great solution for dark parts of the garden, where other herbaceous plants fear to tread. |

Foliage Color | Green |
Companion Plants | Brunnera (Brunnera); Hosta (Hosta); Carpet Bugle (Ajuga); Lungwort (Pulmonaria); Periwinkle (Vinca); Bleeding Heart (Dicentra); |
Care | Thrives in rich, moist, slightly acidic, well-drained soils. Prefers cool, shaded settings. Water regularly in first growing season to establish root system. Once established, prefers evenly moist soil, but tolerates light dry spells. Space 2 to 3 ft. apart as groundcover; closer for faster coverage. Control weeds with mulch until plants fill in. |
