Rare and unique, this tree-like shrub lends an exotic texture to gardens with its multi-stemmed, broadly upright, umbrella-like form and highly textural, glossy, lobed leaves that can emerge coppery red. May produce small flowers clusters followed by black ornamental berries. A beautiful evergreen for sun or dappled shade with notable frost tolerance.

History
Dan Hinkley collected this species in the botanically rich area of extreme Northeastern Sichuan in 2008. A new genus of the Araliaceae family from China and Vietnam, Metapanax contains two species: M. davidii and M. delavayi. Formerly classified as Nothopanax but now accepted as a new genus in south China and Vietnam, where they are commonly referred to as Yi ye liang wang cha or False Ginseng.
