This fantastic selection with dark green foliage topsides and a dense upward-reaching crown produces minimal seedlings as compared to its proliferant species. A North American native that thrives as a landscape specimen in warm regions of the southwestern United States, and is highly adaptable. An excellent alkaline-tolerant shade tree. Evergreen.
Thrives in a range of soils, including rocky, sandy, clay, or loam; highly adaptable, tolerating alkaline or slightly acidic soils and calcareous soils, including caliche. Water deeply, regularly in first few growing seasons to establish an extensive root system. Once established, reduce frequency; tolerates periodic dry spells.
History
Quercus fusiformis (Texas Live Oak) is native to the southwestern region of Oklahoma into Texas and parts of northeastern Mexico. 'Joan Lionetti' was taken from cuttings and was selected for its outstanding and stable qualities (its dark foliage, its consistent, dense and upright form, and its low mast - or seedling - production), as compared to seedling selections (frequently known as Quercis fusiformis 'Heritage'). Qualities frequently associated with seedling selections are an inconsistent in growth form and characteristics. 'Joan Lionetti' a.k.a. 'Improved Heritage' has proven itself to be more stable in growth and characteristics, less prolific of a seed producer, and more adaptable. It was patented by Nicholas Shipley of Tuscon Arizona (patent approved 2017).
Lore
The species name "fusiformis" is Latin for "fusiform" which in botony and zoology refers to an object or body that is tapered at both ends (also referred to as spindle-shaped). The species epitaph of Quercus fusiformis (Texas Live Oak) refers to its spindle-shaped acorns that widen through the middle and are tapered on their ends.
