Feature in mixed borders, where its profusion of large, 6 1/2 inch flower clusters will delight the passerby. This Hydrangea's brilliant mahogany highlights in fall are ideal for extending the interest in shrub borders beyond the flowering season. Also lends a fiery hue to otherwise deep-green shade gardens. Plant as an individual to appreciate the unique foliage texture and leaf shape, or in groups to intensify its impact in the garden. More compact than the traditional Hydrangea, it is a natural in the woodland scene and among rangy natives.
Prefers organically rich, well-drained soils, with shelter from harsh afternoon sun. Water deeply, regularly during first growing season to establish an extensive root system. Fertilize regularly during growing season. Blooms on old wood; prune to shape in summer after flowering. Remove weak, damaged stems in early spring.
History
This selection is one of the first two hydrangea cultivars developed from the U.S. National Arboretum's shrub breeding program in McMinnville, Tennessee. 'Munchkin' (NA 73936; PI 658494) was developed from seedlings obtained from a 1997 open-pollination of oakleaf hydrangea cultivar 'Sikes Dwarf'. It was released in 2010.
