Highly effective as a trough garden or patio plant where some shade with bright light is provided. Create a colorful, whimsical dish garden with several varieties of varied colors and textures, or mass plant in a simple container to create a contemporary look. In frost-free climates, spot into a rock garden, tucked in a boulder grouping or next to a rock path or wall. Effective in Mediterranean landscapes, especially when grouped to create swaths of color.
Care Instructions
Provide well-drained, porous or sandy soil. Best in filtered bright light, especially in extremely hot climates. Water thoroughly when soil is dry to the touch. Protect from frost to prevent scarring of the leaves. Divide clumps as needed in early spring. Fertilize sparingly.
History
An Altman Plants original hybrid created by Renee O' Connell, Echeveria 'Neon Breakers' is an E. shaviana hybrid found to be far superior to others in this species. The product of a planned breeding program, this new variety originated in 2004, from a cross pollination of Echeveria shaviana with the pollen parent an unpatented, proprietary variety of Echeveria cante.times.shaviana. The crossing was made at a commercial greenhouse in Vista, California. 'Neon Breakers' was discovered and selected by Renee O'Connell, in February 2005 at the same location. This variety exhibited brighter coloration and far more disease and pest resistance, with vigorous and unique continuous growth; not shutting down seasonally as typical of Echeveria. Asexual reproduction was first performed in 2005, at a commercial greenhouse in Vista, California, by vegetative leaf cuttings. 'Neon Breakers' has since produced several generations, demonstrating that the unique features of this cultivar are stable and reproduced true to type.
