Deep, glossy, rich green, stiff needles densely spaced and curved against the branches give the appearance of large pipe cleaners. The unique, more open form with asymmetrical branching creates a striking landscape specimen. In the spring there is a firework explosion of pearly white candles that come out in clusters. Evergreen.
This small to medium sized tree can be used as a stand alone specimen or for a wooded expanse. It is loved by a variety of birds that nest in its dense branches.
Foliage Color
Dark Green
Companion Plants
Japanese Maple (Acer); Winterberry (Ilex); Switch Grass (Panicum); Dogwood (Cornus); Barberry (Berberis)
Care Instructions
Thrives in deep, average, well-drained, sandy or gravelly loams, but highly adaptable to a wide range, except soggy soils. Water deeply, regularly in first few growing seasons to establish an extensive root system. Once established, reduce frequency; tolerates occasional, moderate drought. Fertilize in early spring.
History
'Oregon Green' was a seedling selection cultivated by Van Meter & Son Nursery of Oregon. It has dark green stiff needles, more numerous than the species. These stiff needles result in less needle drop in the summer.
