Design Ideas A versatile evergreen shrub for warmer climates that makes the perfect all purpose foliage background. Lightly sheared plants are useful in formal gardens but left alone they are solid naturalistic masses for tropical appearing landscapes. Dense foliage produces excellent hedge at any height, but will produce a useful visual screen along side yards, to add privacy to spa areas or to mask utility yards. Superb glossy background for beds and borders Makes a lush year-round cover up of utilities and vents in foundation beds.
Flower Color White
Foliage Color Green
Companion Plants Kohuhu (Pittosporum); Azalea (Azalea); Butterfly Bush (Buddleja); Ixora (Ixora); Mexican Hardy Petunia (Ruellia)
Care Instructions Thrives in humus-rich, neutral to slightly acidic, well-drained soils. Water deeply, regularly during the first growing season to establish an extensive root system; reduce frequency, once established. Apply a general purpose fertilizer before new growth begins in early spring. For a tidy appearance, prune annually to shape.
History This is the signature genus of the Elaeocarpaceae, which includes more than 60 species of trees native to the tropics and warmer regions of the Old World. This is a major forest species in Asia that has become central to Monrovia's Shogun Series of cultivars. This exclusive cultivar was discovered at the Azusa nursery by Monrovia's Propagation Coach, Andy Proud.
Lore Seeds of this genus have been used as traditional rosary beads known as Rudraksha, which is derived from the Sanskrit for "eyes of the lord". It is said that twenty four different types sprang from the eyes of the Hindu god, Shiva.
