Design Ideas
Dwarf butterfly bush is perfect for bringing butterflies into the garden and up close to the house. Use in side yards where flowers are held up at window level. Ideal choice for breaking up long runs of fence. Particularly attractive along picket fences and lattice where airy open character is a good fit. Fast growth is a super filler for newly constructed home sites. An essential in the wildlife and habitat garden. A casual cottage and country garden performer with bonus of butterflies at bloom time for family fun. The snow-white flowers catch the moonlight and will brighten a night garden, while providing sweet nectar for lacewings and other beneficial night feeders.
Prefers well-drained, fertile soil. Water deeply, regularly during first growing season to establish extensive root system; reduce frequency once established. Remove spent blooms for a tidy appearance. May die to the ground in colder zones, regrowing from the roots in spring. Elsewhere, prune in late fall or early spring. Feed in spring.
History
The Pugster® series of butterfly bushes are a breeding breakthrough, being the first buddleja with the heavy, wide foliage and large, dense flower clusters of the non-dwarf form on the small frame of a dwarf buddleja. Densely branched, thick stems with short internodes withstand colder winter temperatures and better cold tolerance than typical dwarf forms, in as low as zone 5. Pugster White® is a Proven Winner's introduction, resulting from breeding of Buddleia davidii 'UC 608' (seed parent) and Buddleia davidii 'Pink Delight' (pollen parent). The series name, Pugster®, refers to its shared traits with the short, stocky, beloved breed of pug dogs.
