Deciduous/Evergreen
Evergreen
Special Features
Attracts Hummingbirds, Non-toxic to Cats and Dogs, Attracts Pollinators
Don't lose this Hibiscus in far-away plantings. Instead, place it next to patios, entries and in courtyards, where it will be a brilliant focal point. Use along paths for a strikingly colored allee. Its dense and glossy foliage makes a solid hedge or screen. A good cover for bare walls and spaces between windows. Charming when trained into a patio tree and planted in large pots stuffed with annual color.
Thrives in well-drained, enriched soils with neutral to slightly acidic pH. Water deeply and regularly during the first growing season to establish an extensive root system; reduce frequency once established. Apply a general fertilizer before new growth begins in spring. For a formal appearance, prune annually after flowering.
History
Hiroshi "Hiro" Kuwabara began cultivating hibiscus flowers as a hobby. His mission has been to develop a hardier, more vibrant colored hibiscus cultivar within Southern California's climate without the use of a greenhouse. Hiro is known by many in the nursery industry as the co-owner of Yamato Nursery Inc., and provided horticultural advice to the Pacific Palisades (California) community for over 30 years until his retirement in 2004.
