History
Aloe 'X5' was first released in South Africa in 2012 by De Wet Plant Breeders using the marketing name Porcupine. This remarkable Aloe is the result of a cross of two unnamed, complex hybrid aloes, which occurred within a breeding program started in 1973 by Andy Dewet at his nursery in Linbro Park, Republic of South Africa. From the progeny, this selection, 'X5', was made in 2006 by Andy Dewet and Quinton Bean, chosen for its short, compact form with vigorous growing habit and abundant flowers on strong, upright inflorescens. It was first released in the U.S. by Ball Horticulture in 2014, having received U.S. Plant Patent #23,267 in December, 2012. This Aloe is one of several now sold under the Safari Aloe series, marketed by Star Roses and Plants.
