Design Ideas
This beautiful cultivar of a native species is at home in meadows and wild gardens, upscale enough to belong in traditional perennial borders. Perfect for casual cottage or country gardens. Rugged constitution thrives on banks and slopes in the sun. Good addition to spare shrub borders that need late season pick up. Plant around the edges of wetlands or natural garden ponds. Stature is ideal for smaller urban gardens or in limited confines of entries and courtyards. Mass to intensify their color in open beds and borders.
Thrives in average to fertile, well-drained soil. Water deeply, regularly during the first growing season to establish an extensive root system; allow to dry slightly between intervals. Once established, reduce frequency. Fertilize in early spring. Prune lightly in mid to late summer to encourage a new bloom flush. Hard prune after flowering.
History
This new cultivar is an outcome of a planned breeding program conducted by Gavriel Danziger, in Moshav Mishmar Hashiva, Israel. The open pollination cross resulting in this new variety was made during July of 2009, the seed parent being a proprietary seedling variety named 'C. grandiflora 'co-9-564'. The new variety was discovered in July of 2010, within in a group of seedlings resulting from the 2009 crossing, in a research greenhouse in Moshav Mishmar Hashiva, Israel. Asexual reproduction of the new cultivar was performed by vegetative cuttings. This was first performed at a research greenhouse in Moshav Mishmar Hashiva, Israel in February of 2011 and has shown that the unique features of this cultivar are stable and reproduced true to type in more than 100 successive generations. No fruit/seed production had been observed at time of patent application. U.S. Plant Plant Patent #24,241 was issued in January, 2015.
Lore
Coreopsis is a name translated from the Greek for 'bug-like' due to the resemblance of the seed to wood ticks. In addition to being deer resistant, several species of Coreopsis (including C. grandiflora) are rabbit resistant, although very young plants and new seedlings may need to be protected in heavily grazed areas.
