A true collector's gem suited for the shadiest of gardens, this handsome shrub's lustrous, colorfully variegated foliage will brighten dim spaces. Perfect for foundation plantings, woodland gardens or low hedging. A fantastic container accent for covered patios or well-lit indoor spaces. Brought to Monrovia by Dan Hinkley. Evergreen.
Thrives in a wide variety of well-drained soils. Water deeply, regularly in first growing season to establish an extensive root system. Once established, reduce frequency; tolerates drier conditions in cooler summer climates. Feed with a general-purpose fertilizer before new growth begins in spring. Hardy to Zone 7b.
History
This plant originated in Japan and was gifted to plant explorer Daniel J Hinkley by Mr. Suzuki, a nurseryman near Tokyo who deals exclusively in Aucuba. Though it was in fact named 'Suruga Benton' when given to Mr. Hinkley, it is more than likely a seedling raised from that cultivar; in Japan, clonal names are not always assigned. This plant was subsequently brought to Monrovia by Dan Hinkley.
