Design Ideas
This very large, colorful Hosta fills a lot of space in the shade garden. Bold, corrugated leaves offer a unique texture against smoother varieties for an interesting and diverse foliage garden. The predominately silver-blue leaves are a cooler color than the traditional greens and considering the center splash ages to creamy white, this plant looks best combined with creamy rather than other golden variegated plants.
Provide slightly acidic, evenly moist, well-drained, humusy soil. Avoid harsh sun exposures. Water deeply, regularly in first growing season to establish an extensive root system; once established, reduce frequency. Remove old, faded foliage before new leaves emerge in early spring.
History
Hosta sieboldeania 'Thunderbolt' is a sport of the popular Hosta sieboldiana 'Elegans', selected for its striking coloration and more vigorous constitution than its wide parent. Origin: Hawksridge Farms, United Kingdom.
