Variegated Japanese Silver Grass
Miscanthus sinensis 'Variegatus'
Pronunciation: mis-KAN-thus sin-EN-sis var-i-e-GA-tus
|Description||A gracefully arching ornamental grass, with gorgeous dark green blades highlighted by creamy white stripes. Shimmery, silver-white plumes dance atop the foliage mound in the fall. A great choice for textural contrast in perennial or shrub beds.|
|Light||Full sun, Partial sun|
|Watering||Water when top 2 inches of soil is dry.|
|Mature Size||Moderate growing; reaches 6 ft. tall, 3 to 5 ft. wide.|
|Special Features||Dramatic Foliage Color, Easy Care, Waterwise|
|Design Ideas||A most gorgeous variegated ornamental grass. Makes an exceptional light minty green and white accent for beds and borders, and large rock gardens. Plant as a vertical accent among low-growing plants or at the corners of a square patio. Line it up as background foliage for a bed of dwarf shrubs and perennials. Perfect near water gardens and fountains as wildlife cover, to disguise mechanical pumps or filters and to give the illusion of reeds. Also lovely in cobalt-blue or mint-green ceramic pots for patio, porch or terrace.|
|Companion Plants||Ninebark (Physocarpus); Juniper (Juniperus); Potentilla (Potentilla); Aster (Aster); Cranesbill (Geranium); Catmint (Nepeta)|
|Care||Easily grown in average, evenly moist, well-drained, loamy soils. Water deeply and regularly during the first growing season to establish an extensive root system; once established, tolerates moderate dry spells. Cut foliage clumps back to 3 inches above the ground and apply fertilizer in late winter to early spring.|
