Design Ideas
Feature as an landscape accent near the terrace or patio where the blooms can be viewed at close range. Plant in front of larger trees or shrubs with deep green foliage, allowing the brightly variegated spring and fall foliage colors to provide wonderful seasonal contrast. Plant in wildlife gardens, where the attractive red fruit will provide winter food for birds.
Provide enriched, moist, well-drained, acidic soil. Apply a thick layer of mulch to keep root zone cool in summer. Protect from harsh sun in hot regions. Water deeply, regularly during first growing season to establish root system; once established, prefers moist soil, but tolerates mild drought. Feed in early spring. Prune in winter to shape.
History
Developed by the Rutgers University breeding program, this is a stable mutation (or sport) of the popular Stellar Pink® variety of dogwood tree that is the result of crossing two varieties (Cornus kousa and Cornus florida). Besides leaf color (with brighter color), all other attributes are identical to the Stellar Pink variety. This cultivar has exhibited superior winter hardiness and has demonstrated resistance to powdery mildew and anthracnose.
