A beautifully variegated evergreen with small, narrow, green leaves edged in cream, providing a wonderful illuminating quality, especially in a dappled shade garden. Fragrant, white midsummer flowers hang from reddish branch tips. Its columnar form and moderate stature is stunning as a single specimen or massed as a natural hedge or screen.
Thrives in enriched, fertile, acidic, moist, well-drained soil; shelter from harsh sun exposures in hotter summer regions and from damaging winds. Water deeply, regularly during first few growing seasons to establish an extensive root system. Apply a thick layer of mulch to keep roots cool.
History
This was selected by Tasmanian plantsmen Ken Gillanders from the wild and brought to the U.S. by Dan Hinkley from a trip there in 1998.
Lore
The honey made from Eucryphia lucida is considered amongst the best in the world.
