Design Ideas
This hybrid magnolia is a perfect, single front yard specimen. A natural for parkway and along a driveway. Favored in public parks and other civic spaces. Such an elegant tree is a natural in larger estate and suburban homesites where its full size and breadth is revealed without pruning. Exceptional when combined with other trees that offer summer flowers, autumn foliage and winter silhouettes for four season groves.
Provide deep, organically rich, well-drained, evenly moist soil; avoid soggy soils. Water deeply, regularly during first few growing seasons to establish an extensive root system. Once established, reduce frequency; tolerates mild dry spells. Feed with a general purpose fertilizer before new growth begins in spring.
History
This tree is counted among the many Brooklynensis Hybrids. They descend from a cross between American native, Maganolia acuminataand Chinese Magnolia lilliflora, and then recrossed with M. Lilliflora var subcordata. Yellow Bird is more specifically a result of an early Brooklynensis, Maganolia 'Evamaria' crossed with M. l. subcordata. It was introduced in 1967 as the best of the yellow flowered hybrids.
Lore
Magnolia lilliflora is known in its homeland of China as the Mulan Magnolia where it is native to the Sichuan and Yunnan Provices.
