History
A collection from plant explorer Dan Hinkley's time on Mount Chiri on the southern tip of the Korean Peninsula in 1997, discovered on a very steep moss-covered impoverished boulder strewn clearing with his expedition companion, Bleddyn Jones. This was a self-layered lower branch from a specimen possessing sterile florets with double sepals, and made its way from Japan to the United State, by way of Europe. It was given the name 'Chiri-san Sue', after Bleddyn's wife Sue Wynn-Jones, and the mountain on which it was discovered.
Lore
It is often disputed whether Hydrangea serrata is a variety of H. macrophylla, or vice-versa, it is agreed that it is a much hardier species with the ability to bloom on new wood, which in hand makes it highly adaptable to varied climates.
