Prunus persica 'Contender'
Pronunciation: PROO-nus PER-see-kuh
|Description||Exceptionally cold hardy and tolerant of late spring frosts, this is an ideal peach for colder northern climates. Showy pink spring blooms yield a heavy crop of freestone fruit with firm, juicy, yellow flesh in late summer. Self-fertile. Recommended chill: 1050 hours.|
|Watering||Water when top 2 inches of soil is dry.|
|Blooms||Spring, late summer fruit.|
|Mature Size||Reaches 12 to 15 ft. tall and wide.|
|Flower Attributes||Fragrant, Showy Flowers|
|Care||Provide humus-rich, slightly acidic, well-drained soil. Water deeply, regularly during the first few first growing seasons to establish an extensive root system; reduce frequency once established. Feed with a general purpose fertilizer before new growth begins in spring. Prune to thin during dormant season; this results in new growth that produces the flowers and fruit.|
