Design Ideas
Here is a trouble-free rose to use as groundcover in a sunny border or as a low hedge along a path or sidewalk. With a long season of bloom and handsome foliage, this is an excellent rose.
Thrives in enriched, loamy, well-drained soil. Space plants 3 ft. apart as groundcover. Water deeply, regularly in first growing season to establish an extensive root system. Tolerates brief drought, when established. In zones 5 and colder, protect young plants in winter. Fertilize in spring and summer. Prune back by 1/3 annually.
History
This popular plant is of course a member of the Rosaceae family. The genus Rosa was classified by Linnaeus in the 18th century and today contains over one hundred species, all originating in the Northern Hemisphere. He chose the name after the ancient Latin word for the European species. From the wild species there have evolved thousands of hybrids and forms with many branches in the ancestral tree. This rose is the final product of twenty five years of breeding by the noted German rosarian, Werner Noack. Its parents are a Flower Carpet rose and another of Noak's earlier hybrids, the second one named after his wife, R. x 'Margaret Merril Noack'. Noack started patenting his new roses and this white was patented in 1994 as Flower Carpet # 9573.
Lore
Developed out of a 25 year breeding program by Dr. Werner Noack of Noack Rosen, a German rose breeder famous for his commitment to disease-resistant hybrids. Practically maintenance-free yet extremely floriferous and vigorous plants can produce as many 2000 flowers per year! This shrubby groundcover series of sterile roses includes many colors, all produce a limited number of hips making deadheading unnecessary.
